The Tempest

28 Jul

GYP are excited to present The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

Now in its ninth season, this young and energetic company, the only touring youth theatre group in the UK or Europe which performs solely Shakespeare, brings fresh eyes and an unexpected twist to the magical and mystical tale of Prospero and Miranda, Caliban and Ariel, Stephano and Trinculo and the other visitors to the island. Our island is a huge patchwork quilt from which things appear and into which other things melt. It provides a magic carpet ride to a long lost island in the sea, a musical odyssey ‘full of sound and fury’. Be prepared to be surprised by the ‘conventional’ and the ‘experimental’ juxtaposed in a place where nothing is quite as it seems, a story for you told with pace, humour, energy and passion, a story which, in different ways, fundamentally questions who we are.

The Gloucestershire Youth Players (GYP) is the only youth theatre group in the UK and Europe which performs solely Shakespeare. Now in its ninth season, this young and energetic company presents ‘The Tempest’ from both conventional and experimental angles. This is the credo of GYP: open to new ideas, whilst drawing upon ages of dramatic experience as well as the knowhow of visiting professional practitioners. The company tours throughout the South Midlands, visiting professional theatre venues, gardens, barns, fields and airport runways. Based in Cheltenham, it is open to all 16-21 year olds who wish to join to gain a professional theatre experience, allied with a demanding touring schedule.

We also have a schools week, during which productions are taken to young audiences. GYP is proud and privileged to be able to perform at the Tobacco Factory in 2014 and to challenge our audiences to views of Shakespeare, old and new.
